Vietnamese Family Meal
The Vietnamese greatly value the importance of family meals as it is a time for all members to sit together, talk and strengthen family bonds. All meals include some element of rice (mostly hot steamed rice, sometimes rice noodle or sticky rice) and the food is shared among family members instead of dividing into individual plates.
Beside rice as the main source of carbohydrate, a typical Vietnamese meal consists of a salty protein dish like caramelized pork, fish or tofu (món mặn), some sort of greens (món rau) and a large bowl of soup (món canh). Depending on the region and season, the ingredients and cooking method of the side dishes might vary.
